An editorial index of hotels worth looking at closely

An index of hotels, kept as a portfolio

Four kinds of hotel are gathered here, and they have almost nothing in common. One trades in commissioned art, one in seven feet of moulded berth, one in a resort floorplan with a gaming room somewhere inside it, and one in river ice that will be water again by May. Setting them side by side is the whole point: each makes an argument about what a room is for, and the arguments do not agree.

What follows is written, not sold. There are no prices, no ratings, no booking forms and no reviews — only descriptions of buildings and what it is like to be inside them, set down one after another as pages in a portfolio. Each section stands on its own; read them in any order.
